Madarao is a region on the border between Nagano and Niigata prefectures Japan. Visitors love the waist deep powder and fantastic choice of runs.

Chalet Madarao is the ultimate accommodation in Madarao for those who want to be close to the slopes, yet enjoy the being close to restuarnts, convenience stores and bars. Our staff can recommend nearby restaurants and attractions off the slopes. Take a look at our Other Things To Do page for some ideas.

If you want to explore a little further afield the area has numerous ski resorts. Choose from Tangram Ski Circus which can be skied on a joint ticket, and Akakan Ski Resort with its impressive runs for skiers of all ability levels. There’s also Seki Onsen, known for attracting ‘powder hounds’, Madarao Suginohara with its long cruisy trails, and Ikenotaira Onsen with its bonus snowboard facilities. In the other direction you can go to Nozawa Onsen with its tradition village, Togari Onsen with its ungroomed runs or impressive Kijimadaira. Turn right at the bottom of the mountain instead of left and you can got to Ryuoo with its cable car or the many resorts collectively known as Shiga Kogen.

A day trip to see the snow monkeys is always fun.

For information about the local ski resorts look under Skiing and Snowboarding.

  • Whilst Madarao is a powder mecca there are lots of other things to do. So if you want a break or your companion is not so keen on the snow we can provide some alternatives.
